A singular work of nature, discovered in the Amazon and transformed by hand.
Each Rock Crystal Bath begins long before it reaches the studio. Designer Sebastian Fenwick travels deep into the Brazilian Amazon in search of exceptionally large formations of natural rock crystal. Suitable pieces are extraordinarily rare. A single bath may require a crystal mass of approximately 15–17 tonnes, hidden within remote areas of the jungle and shaped entirely by geological forces over millions of years.
Finding a piece of this scale can take two to three months of dedicated exploration. Once a suitable formation is identified, the required permissions are obtained from the local government before the crystal can be carefully extracted and transported to Sebastian's studio.
Arrival at the studio marks the beginning of an equally exacting process. Before carving can commence, the entire crystal is carefully scanned for internal fractures, weaknesses and natural inclusions. This stage is essential: every decision must respond to the individual structure of the stone.
Only after the crystal has passed this assessment can the bath begin to take shape. The carving process is undertaken by hand using specialist cutting tools developed specifically for each piece. Individual cutting blades are produced with different grades and sizes of industrial diamond, selected according to the density, structure and characteristics of the particular crystal being worked.
The result is not simply a bath, but a sculpture whose final form could only have emerged from that one extraordinary piece of stone.
Giant formations of rock crystal of sufficient scale and structural quality are exceptionally uncommon.
Their rarity means that no two commissions can ever be repeated. Natural veining, translucency, mineral inclusions, crystalline movement and subtle variations in colour remain visible throughout the finished surface, creating a piece with its own identity.
Every completed Rock Crystal Bath therefore represents a remarkable convergence of geology, discovery, engineering and craftsmanship.
Because every crystal is unique, the time required to transform it into a finished bath varies considerably. Following discovery, permitting and transport, each crystal must undergo a detailed structural assessment before the carving programme can be established. The scale of the piece, its internal composition and the complexity of the final design all influence the time required.
